Mechanical dust separators are used to roughly separate gas from dust particles. The separating effect of mechanical separators is based on the mass inertia of the particles to be separated. Labyrinth separators and cyclones are examples of mechanical separators.
Mechanical separators consist of a simple construction with no moving parts, thereby limiting maintenance to the dust separator to a minimum. Other important advantages of mechanical separators are:
- suited to extract large quantities of dust
- little risk of clogging
- can be used as pre-separator before a filter
